Today, the U.S. Supreme Court validated President Trump’s “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” upholding his Muslim Ban in a shameful decision that will haunt our country.
The Supreme Court chose to ignore the racial and religious hatred Trump spewed on the campaign trail and in the White House. The Court chose not to extend the same religious protection it gives to homophobic bakers to refugees fleeing violence, and chose to give Trump a license to discriminate from the Oval Office. It is as clear as ever how rigged our government is against people of color and religious minorities.
Today may be a victory for the bigots who have turned Americans against each other for their own gain, but their celebration will be short-lived. This is their twilight. We—people whose lives are guided by empathy, acceptance, and love—outnumber them, we are louder than them, and we are coming to take our government back from them. Trump’s mission is to divide us by having us turn inward, away from our neighbors, but he’s going to get a wake up call. Today’s decision will push us even closer together, united across communities, to stand up and fight back.
If Trump thinks his Muslim Ban can keep me out of Congress, he’s got another thing coming. As the next Congresswoman for Michigan’s 13th district, I’ll introduce legislation immediately and fight tirelessly to overturn the Muslim Ban. The Trump administration will not wield its license to discriminate against immigrants at our borders on my watch.
